Potato pancakes (de. Reibeplätzchen)
This is a special treat my mum was preparing sometimes during the weekend. I think my father likes it the most. 🙂 Even though the potato pancakes are fairly simple to do , preparing them for a whole family is quite time consuming! Despite that, as they are so tasty and they make me feel like home, I cannot stop myself to do them once in a while. 😉
According to my boyfriend, the potato pancakes are also quite popular in Germany. However, in Poland we serve them rather just with some sour cream, while in his country they like them sweet, that is, with apple sauce.

For 2-3 portions you will need:
♥ 2 little onions (around 100g)
♥ 600g peeled potatoes
♥ 3 tablespoons potato starch (45g)
♥ 1 large egg
♥ 1/2 teaspoon salt
♥ pepper
♥ Oil for frying (I use sunflower or rapeseed oil)
to serve with:
♥ Salty version: Sour cream (or greek yogurt)
♥ Sweet version: apple sauce
Preparation time: 30-45min (with grating and frying)
1. Grate potatoes using the thines grater. The best is to use the funny grater side you can see on the picture below. Chop the onions. Thanks to this workout you can eat these pancakes without (much) remorse. 😉
Add the egg, potato starch, salt and pepper and mix it all well.
2. With a spoon put portions of the potato mix on a very hot oil. Fry for 3-4min on each side. They should turn golden brown. When done use a paper towel to remove an excess of oil.
3. Serve with greek yogurt/whipped cream /apple sauce and some freshly ground pepper. Enjoy ♥
I love potato pancakes! I can’t remember the last time that I had some.. they look delicious. I definitely will be making the recipe and topping them with sour cream, chives and bacon – just the way that my grandmother used to make them.
Ooh, these look just perfect!
